Intramural it Up

One of the best things about college, in my opinion, is the opportunity to continue playing the sports you have loved ever since you were a little kid, but not necessarily at the collegiate level. Coming in to college, I considered walking on to either our D3 women’s soccer team or volleyball team. However, I decided not to do so because I wanted to have the chance to get to know what it was like to have the option of hanging out with friends and choosing when to do workouts. I have played some type of sport since I was about six years old and played competitively until I was eighteen. But, even though the “actual” competition may have stopped, the amount of competitiveness certainly has not slowed down. Each school has an intramural sport, or rec, department that students can participate in. This was one of the fastest and most fun ways to meet people who enjoy the sport or are a “has-been” like you are. The different sports bring out different people and groups, which can make it easier to make friends with some people who already have a common interest as you. Now, I am not saying that you will become best friends with these people or hang out with them the entire time you are in college, but it will give you a group to have fun with when it comes to looking for a team. And, there are always those teams that think this is the Olympics and have to go super hard and take the entire process very seriously. Do not let that intimidate you from looking for a team to join or trying something new. My intramural teams have made me try new sports, like flag football, and let me hang onto my favorites: volleyball (sand and indoor) and soccer. If you are looking for a softball or basketball player, sorry I am definitely not the person you want, but I will come cheer you on! Intramural sports, just like any other team sport, teaches you how to get to know new people and work with those, who at times, may be difficult to work with. Get out there and try something new! You may be surprised at what you are good at or what you think is fun! Let me know down in the comments what are some of your intramural experiences or if you would ever consider looking to join!

I loved this post! I'm on the women's soccer team which takes up a lot of my time but intramural's has given me the opportunity to do something other than soccer. I play sand and indoor volleyball which is so fun to me and I played in high school so I'm not a total stranger to the sport. I think its such a great way to meet people, hang out, and honestly have a little break from school. I agree with you on the no softball, that is not my sport either. Great post!

I have never participated in intramural sports at UMHB but I always hear the best things! I love going to support my friends at their games and getting to socialize. Although I've never been on a team I love how it is a great community for so many!

I love this! especially since I am a ref for our intramural sports here on campus plus I have played on a few of the teams also. I think that I have had just as much fun reffing as I have had playing because I am there for all the drama and good parts that happen!

KB!

I really enjoyed this post! Even though I chose to continue my sport at the collegiate level I find I do really love participating in intramural sports. Even though as athletes we aren't allowed to play during season I always find a way. My freshman year the tennis team put together a 3 on 3 basketball team and it was a great way to have some down time from all the practices and games. I am glad you find as much enjoyment from it as I do.

Blessings!

Cole
